Carpenter asked Willy Breitling for a Navitimer that counted to twenty-four, because in orbit nothing outside the window tells you whether it is morning. It went up as the first Swiss wristwatch in space and was ruined hours later, after the capsule overshot and left him bobbing in the Atlantic.
